When most people hear "stretch film," they picture a single thing: a big, clear roll wrapped around a pallet in a warehouse. In reality, the stretch film that comes off a modern rewinding line looks very different depending on who it is for and what it protects.

At Juexuan Automation, our rewinding machines process the same base film mother roll into four very different finished products — and that versatility is exactly what keeps a film converter's factory busy across all four seasons. Here are the four finished film types your rewinder can be making for you.

1. Colored Hand & Machine Stretch Film Rolls

What it looks like: Bright black, blue, red, white — on rolls with colored plastic end caps (usually green 3-inch flanges for hand rolls).

What it's used for:

  • Black stretch film blocks UV light and hides the contents of a pallet — popular for outdoor storage, high-value goods, and cargo that ships long distances on deck.

  • Blue stretch film is a warehouse favorite for color-coding inventory by SKU, zone, or supplier.

  • Red and white rolls are often chosen by brands that want their pallets to match corporate livery, or by third-party logistics providers marking their own loads.

Clear film may still dominate tonnage, but colored rolls carry a price premium and repeat order loyalty — a product line every converter should consider.

2. Cable & Wire Coil Wrapping Film

What it looks like: A tight, transparent sleeve wrapped around a coil of black electrical wire, holding hundreds of meters of cable together against dust, moisture, and abrasion.

What it's used for:

  • Copper and aluminum wire producers use thin stretch film to bind coils after take-up, preventing the spool from loosening during trucking or ocean freight.

  • It also doubles as a corrosion barrier: when combined with desiccant, the wrapped coil survives humid container voyages without tarnishing.

For film converters, this is a quietly steady niche. Cable factories buy film in large, recurring volumes — they don't care about shelf appeal, they care about consistent thickness and reliable cling, which is exactly what a servo-controlled rewinder delivers.

3. Mini Rolls & Protective Film for Hardware and Metal Parts

What it looks like: Small, translucent greenish or yellowish rolls (often 5 cm to 15 cm wide), plus the same film stretched over metal rollers, hooks, brackets, and machined parts.

What it's used for:

  • Mini hand rolls live in furniture factories, glass workshops, and appliance assembly lines — used to wrap door panels, kitchen countertops, and window frames before shipping.

  • Protective film over metal components — aluminum profiles, stainless sheets, die-cast hardware — keeps scratches, oil, and fingerprints off the surface until the end customer unpacks.

This segment demands narrow widths and small outer diameters, so it pairs naturally with a narrow-web rewinder/slitter (0.5 m class) that can slit mother film into precise 50 mm, 100 mm and 150 mm mini rolls with 50 mm or 76 mm cores.

4. Food Cling Film for Kitchen and Household Use

What it looks like: A clear, highly transparent roll pulled over a bowl of fruit — thin, quiet, self-adhering, and food-contact safe.

What it's used for:

  • Household cling film for leftover storage, fruit and vegetable covering, and meal prep.

  • Foodservice roll wrap used by restaurants, delis, and bakeries.

This is the most regulated film of the four: the resin must meet food-contact standards, and the rewinding line must meet hygiene expectations (clean room-adjacent environment, no oil contamination, paper-core or coreless formats depending on market). Many film converters start with industrial stretch film and add a food-grade cling line once they have a reliable rewinder.

Why This Matters: One Mother Roll, Four Revenue Streams

Here is the business insight: these four products don't need four different factories. A modern four-shaft automatic rewinding machine — like the JX-500-4AR — can switch between them by changing a few settings:

Finished product

Core options

Typical roll weight

Machine feature used

Colored pallet wrap

50/76 mm cored

up to 8 kg

Four-shaft continuous roll change

Cable coil wrap

coreless or narrow cored

by customer

Coreless mode

Mini / protective film rolls

50/76 mm cored

0.3–2 kg

Slitting to narrow widths

Household cling film

cored or coreless

retail format

Servo tension control

With a working width of 300–500 mm, line speed up to 1,000 m/min, and daily output up to 3,500 kg on a 12-hour shift, the same machine that runs black machine wrap on Monday can be set up for mini protective rolls by Wednesday. That flexibility is how small-to-mid converters survive when one industry goes quiet — they simply reroute the line to the next product.

The Bottom Line

Stretch film is not one product. It is a family of films — colored industrial wrap, cable coil banding, narrow protective rolls, and food-grade cling — that share a common origin on a rewinding machine.

If you're evaluating a rewinder, don't ask only "how fast is it?" Ask instead: can it switch cored and coreless runs, slit to narrow mini widths, and hold tension at 1,000 m/min without wrinkling? That answer determines how many of these four revenue streams you can actually open up.
